LOVELAND, CO — The final draft of a new standard for automated optical inspection was completed this week, a spokesperson for the committee said.

The document is said to provide a set of critical guidelines for capabilities definitions, as well as evaluation, implementation and operation use of AOI.

After 24 months, a group formed under the auspices of IPC completed the working draft at a committee meeting in Loveland.

Joseph Vilella, chairman of the subcommittee, said, "I'm extremely happy with the effort that the members of the subcommittee set forth to finish this document. This is a unifying document that was essential to foster the proper evaluation, deployment and use of a technology that is absolutely critical to ensure the best possible quality of our electronics products."

Now that the subcommittee has put its finishing touches on the final draft, IPC-641 is ready for industry review. Following a balloting process, the new standard should be available for industry use in 90 to 120 days, the spokesperson said.

According to the spokesperson, the subcommittee will next focus on a standard for AXI that will be equivalent to the standard for manual inspection (IPC-A-610D).
