SAN FRANCISCO -- CIOs in July predicted IT budgets will grow this year, up from 6% in June.

Spending projections were up in all categories month over month, except telecom equipment.

The poll was conducted last month by Deutsche Bank.

Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore said in a research note that most areas of hardware are expected to grow more slowly this year than last due to economic and cyclical factors.

CIOs at small firms of less than 100 employees forecast 22% IT budget growth while their counterparts at firms of 101 to 500 workers expect 10% growth.

The biggest companies (more than 5000 employees) project 7% growth, up from 2% in June and the highest forecast since October 2004.

Deutsche Bank said panelists 29% of respondents have already deployed some form of voice-over-IP and 24% plan to do so within the next 12 months. Still, that leaves more than half the respondents without a near-term VoIP strategy.
