SAN FRANCISCO -- The nation's CIOs project IT spending to increase to 6% over the next year, according to a poll taken in November, up one point from October.

Spending projections were up or flat in most categories month over month, said Deustche Bank and CIO magazine, who administer the poll.
CIOs at firms of 501-1,000 employees and 1,001-5,000 employees predict 8% and 4% growth, respectively, up from 5% and 1% in October, respectively.

However, CIOs at firms with more than 5,000 employees dropped their budget growth estimates from 4% to 2%. Firms employing less than 100 workers dropped their forecasts to 11%, from one point, while those employing 101-500 fell to 5% from 7%.

Security software remains the top spending priority, with storage spending next.

Computer hardware spending forecasts are flat month on month, with the November poll showing 45.7% of panelists plan spending increases.
