EL SEGUNDO, CAiSuppli Corp. predicts global PC shipments will rise to 264 million units in 2007, up 11.2% from 239 million in 2006.

iSuppli upgraded its forecast following stronger-than-anticipated first-quarter shipments of notebook computers. The previous forecast envisioned 10.7% growth for the year.

Notebook PC shipments rose to 21.8 million units in the first quarter, up 23% year-over-year. First-quarter notebook shipments were 3% higher than anticipated, said the research firm.

iSuppli expects notebooks to account for almost 40% of total PC market shipments.

In a related note, iSuppli predicts solid-state drives in notebook PCs will reach 12% by the end of 2009. In contrast, hybrid hard drives in notebooks will reach 35% by the end of that period.
