San Francisco – A March poll of CIOs nationwide predicts an 8.6% growth in IT budgets over the next year, up from 7.8% in December’s poll. Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore added in a research note that spending projections were up in all categories, except security software, which was flat.

Results from small firms (101-500 employees) were most bullish, forcasting 13% IT budget growth, and even smaller firms expected 12% growth. Large firms predicted 7% growth, with medium firms expecting a 5% increase.

The DB poll showed storage systems as the spending priority with 56.7% of respondents planning to increase spending, up from 49.7% in December.  Security software placed second with 50.8% planning to increase spending.

March results indicate that 48% of panelists plan to increase spending on computer hardware, including 57.1% of CIOs at very large companies (vs. 50% for that group in December). More small and large companies also predicted spending increases than in December.
