Flextronics will become a preferred manufacturing partner for
SemIndia Inc., a chip manufacturing consortium working with Advanced Micro Devices, the Indian government, Government of Andhra Pradesh and the India Semiconductor Association.
Flextronics will manufacture electronic products for SemIndia and SemIndia will manufacture semiconductor chips for the various products that Flextronics manufactures in India (including chips for cell phones, set-top boxes and PCs). “The partnership with Flextronics is an endorsement of SemIndia’s vision of creating India’s first world class wafer fab unit and is another significant step towards our goal, said Dr. Vinod Agarwal, president and CEO of SemIndia. “This project has successfully managed to bring together all components of the ecosystem in India, which include semiconductor technology, semiconductor chip manufacturing, systems manufacturing and investment and policy initiatives/incentives commitment from the government necessary for doing semiconductor and electronic products manufacturing in India.”
According to the Indian Semiconductor Association and Frost & Sullivan, the total market for semiconductors in India will be over $ 40 billion by 2015.
