PENANG -- Motorola has relocated some of its programs from Sanmina plants in China to ones in Penang, a company executive said.
Motorola Solutions Malaysia deputy managing director John Andersen said called the migration temporary and tied in part to US-China trade conflicts.
For Motorola, the move is something of a homecoming. Sanmina assumed control over the Motorola facility in Bayan Lepas in 2016.
The move reportedly will not require any equipment reconfiguration from China to Penang.
Sanmina also builds for Motorola in Reynosa, Mexico; Kunshan, China; and Campinas, Brazil.
Approved new manufacturing investment in Penang was RM8.8 billion ($2.1 billion) in the first quarter, up 768% year-over-year.
