TAIPEI -- Compal, one of the world's largest producers of notebook computers, reported December sales of NT$32.1 million ($96.5 million), down 6.5% year-over-year.

Sales were up 7.1% from November, however.

For the year, the company's sales totaled NT$427.7 billion ($12.9 billion), down 3% from 2007.

Compal's performance topped those of a pair of competitors. Acer saw sales drop 8.8% for the month to NT$25.2 million ($75.7 million). The figure is down 29% from November.

And Asustek reported revenues of NT$16.1 million ($48.4 million), down 20.3% year-over-year and 35% sequentially.
