Wakefield spent 50 years in electronics manufacturing, including 25 at VLSIP. He also spent 20 years at Texas Instruments, where he began research and development of semiconductor epitaxial wafer processing and semiconductor gallium arsenide. He also researched solar energy and its applications, and led VLSIP's entry into implanted medical electronics.
He had a Ph.D.. from Iowa State University and an MBA from Southern Methodist University.
Wakefield's accomplishments included a number of patents issued to him in the US and in other countries.
